2012 ACCC Innovator Awards
The Association of Community Cancer Centers' 2012 Innovator Awards, sponsored by GE Healthcare, honor member programs that have exhibited forward-thinking strategic planning and developed pioneering programs and replicable models. These innovative programs will be recognized at the ACCC 29th National Oncology Conference in San Antonio, Tex., October 3-6, 2012. The innovators will share their creative solutions and outstanding programs with meeting attendees. Both ACCC and GE Healthcare will promote these innovative programs to oncology care providers as well as to the broader healthcare community across the country.

How to Develop a Breast Cancer Program Across a Large Health System
These cancer programs drove a vision of a breast cancer clinical program that focuses on patient experience, quality of care, physician engagement, performance improvement, and cost efficiencies. - Anne Arundel Medical Center, DeCesaris Cancer Institute, Annapolis, Md.
Rapid Access Chest and Lung Assessment Program
This coordinated, multidisciplinary approach led to expedited referrals and better management of patients with abnormal chest findings. - Akron General Medical Center, McDowell Cancer Center, Akron, Ohio
Bridging the Psychosocial and Financial Needs of Oncology Patients
This innovative patient navigation program reduced psychosocial distress, secured direct financial assistance to patients of $1.35 million that would otherwise not have been available, and reduced institutional bad debt. - Dorcy Cancer Center at St. Mary-Corwin Medical Center, Pueblo, Colo.
A Comprehensive Team Approach for Patients with Head and Neck Cancer
The Cancer Assessment Resource Education Survivorship (CARES) multidisciplinary team addressed the unique quality-of-life issues faced by patients with head and neck cancers, including difficulties with communication and swallowing, tooth decay, weight loss, and lymphedema. - Fox Chase Cancer Center, Philadelphia, Pa.
New Approaches to Maximize Patient Flow and Reduce Inpatient Hospital Length of Stay
Two multidisciplinary teams worked in tandem to consolidate manual systems, implement bed management software, address multiple operational process improvements, and reduce inpatient hospital length of stay. - Grant Medical Center, Grant Cancer Care, Columbus, Ohio
A Unique Screening Outreach Program: ConvenientCare Mammography
By working closely with area employers, this program offers convenient and efficient screening mammograms to women who work in the downtown community by providing transportation and screening all within the lunch hour. - Mountain States Tumor Institute, St. Luke's Regional Medical Center, Boise, Idaho
A Multidisciplinary Supportive Oncology Clinic with Integrated Medication Therapy Management
This model supportive care clinic improved access to early palliative care in patients with advanced cancer and includes a pharmacist who works side by side with the nurse practitioner to implement medication therapy management and medication reconciliation. - Southwest Cancer Center, UMC Health System, Lubbock, Tex.
Process Improvement Through Patient and Employee Feedback
This community cancer program developed tools that give voice to patients and empower staff to consistently improve the overall patient experience.
2011 ACCC Innovator Awards
